Arthur Barrett Sr.

DAR #A135284

Arthur Barrett Sr, was born 10 September 1742, in Nottingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Thomas Barrett of Delaware County and his wife Hannah Oldham and was listed in the Will of Thomas Barrett, 7 December 1781. During the Revolutionary War he served as a private in the Second Battalion of the Chester County Militia, commanded by Col. Evan Evans.

Arthur would marry Elizabeth Baldwin (14 September 1756‐10 July 1811) 8 October 1773 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. It seems that there was some commotion regarding their marriage as Arthur was disowned from Quaker meetings at Nottingham due to him marrying Elizabeth, a staunch Methodist. He would eventually join the Methodist church after Arthur becoming ill and was nursed back to health by "Betty". Arthur and Elizabeth were the parents of eight children and five grandchildren. Children were: Thomas 1775‐1849, Anna 177‐1851, Arthur Jr 1778‐1844, David 1780‐1844, Elizabeth 1783‐1857, Susanna 1792‐1893, Rachel 1795‐ 1867. Arthur passed from this life on 7 March 1828, Harrison County, Ohio. He is buried in the Barrett Cemetery, Jewett, Harrison County, Ohio, next to his wife Elizabeth.

Thomas Barrett, son of Arthur and Elizabeth, was born 8 August 1775 in Frederick County, Virginia. Thomas would marry Margaret Alameda Warden (born 1775 Maryland) in 1799. As their young family grew they would push west and settle in Belmont County, Ohio. Margaret was a member of the Plainfield Monthly Meeting of Friends in Belmont County, Ohio. She was the mother of nine children, including Warden (1799‐1880), Arthur (1807‐1762), and Thomas (1813‐1874). Margaret would pass on 14 May 1838 and was buried in Flushing Friends Cemetery, Flushing Township, Belmont County, Ohio. Thomas would follow 9 December 1849 and was laid to rest in the Barrett Cemetery, Jewett, Harrison County, Ohio. Their son Arthur Barrett, born 16 September 1807 in Frederick County, Virginia, would push further west, during his lifetime, settling in Fulton County, Illinois. He passed on 22 September 1862 in Astoria, Fulton County. He is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Astoria, Fulton, Illinois, alongside his wife Hannah “Hance” Sears. Hannah was born 5 April 1817 Freeport, Harris

Arthur Barrett was the sixth and last child born to Arthur and Hannah Sears Barrett. He was born in Astoria Township, Fulton County, Illinois, on 31 August 1852. On 26 July 1876 in Fulton County, Illinois, he would marry Lyida Ann “Liddie” Hess daughter of Lewis and Lydia Landen Hess (12 May 1859 Baltimore City, Maryland). Following their marriage they moved to Kansas for a little less than twelve years before returning to Illinois. They would settle in Schuyler County and establish a farm there. Eleven of their children were born in Kansas. Three died young and the remaining twelve reached adulthood. Following the death of Arthur in 1910, Lydia moved to Colchester. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church. Lydia passed on 1 June 1943, Colchester, McDonough County. Lydia and the three children who died young, Emma, Maude and Glen Ansel, are all buried in White Oak Cemetery, Schuyler County, Illinois beside Arthur who died in Schuyler County, on 11 September 1910.

The Barrett family would stay in Illinois. Caroline “Callie” Barrett was born 24 August 1893 in Littleton Township, Schuyler County, Illinois. On 31 January 1912 she would marry Roy Lee Curtis born 23 July 1887 in Chillicothe, Livingston County, Missouri. Caroline died 28 January 1968, Macomb, McDonough County, Illinois. Roy followed shortly after on 24 March 1969, also in Macomb. They are both buried in the Forest Lawn Memory Gardens there.

Marjory E Curtis, daughter of Caroline and Roy Curtis, would marry Robert Alexander on 23 March 1943. Marjory was born in Bethel Township, McDonough County, Illinois on 1 February 1924. Robert Lee Alexander was born 20 January 1921, Gardnersville, Pendleton County, Kentucky. Serving in WWII, Robert received both a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He died 7 April 2008 Macomb, McDonough County. Marjory died 22 September 2022, also in Macomb. The two are interred in Oakwood Cemetery, Macomb.
