Daniel Harris

Daniel Harris was born 24 Jul 1759, in Plainfield, Windham County, Conneticut. He was the son of Nathan Harris (1721‐1801) and Suzanna Rude (1729‐1801), of Plainfield, CT. They married on 5 Jul 1749. Their children were Daniel, Nathan Jr, Gemima, Christobel, Ann, Jeptha, Joseph, Jeremiah, and Zadack.
During the Revolutionary War Daniel enlisted and served in Connecticut under different commands from 1776 to 1778. His rank was Private. He served under Captains Mott, Coit, Waterman and Green, and under Colonel Ely.
Daniel married Lucy Fox on March 9, 1780. Lucy was in born 1760, in Plainville, Conneticut, and passed in
1797. With his wife and first five children Daniel moved to Becket, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, in 1788.
The children were James Harris, Nathan Harris, and Joseph Harris. Harvey Harris and Isaac
Harris were born after their move. Lucy was just over 37 years old when she passed in 1797,
leaving Daniel with seven children under the age of 17 years. Lucy is buried in Becket, Massachusetts, in
the Harris Burial Ground. In 1831, Daniel moved to Locke, Cayuga County, New York and was
still a resident of Locke, New York, in 1840. He lived there with his son, Joseph, for the last eleven
years of his life. Daniel died April 14, 1842, and was buried at the Old Village Cemetery in Locke,
Cayuga County, New York.
Daniel's first son, James Harris (born 22 Jul 1782, Plainfield, Windham County, Conneticut ‐ died 11 Jul 1850, Table Grove, Illinois), married Prudence Harris (his cousin‐daughter of Nathan Harris) were married Dec 15, 1802, in Becket, Massachusetts. They were the parents of at least seven sons and six daughters. In 1831, James rode a horse to McDonough County, Illinois to see if a soldier's claim he had purchased was a suitable place for his family, and in 1832, the entire family traveled there by wagon train. James and Prudence are buried in the Harris Cemetery, Eldorado Township., McDonough County, Illinois.
The children of James and Prudence were James Hiram (1804‐1808), Webster, Daniel (1806‐1868), James Harvey (1808‐1876), Prudence (1812‐1896), Lucy (1815‐1895), Dan (1817‐1817), Caroline (1819‐18470, Mary Ann (1822‐18380, Elizabeth (1824‐1847), Nellora H. (1826‐1879) and Joanas Rude (1831‐1910).
Nine generations of Harrises have now lived in McDonough County, Illinois, including a former and current member, of the General Macomb Chapter, NSDAR.
