Elias Hatfield

When Elias Hatfield was born on March 11, 1760, in Woodbridge Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey, his father, William Hatfield, was 23 and his mother, Anne Wright, was 23. His siblings were Mary, Abraham, William, Samuel, David, Sarah, and Jesse. The last three were half siblings.

During his military service, Elias is said to have served under Captains Fitz Randolph and Pearson, as well as under Colonel Jacques. He is further reported to have been part of the New Jersey Flying Camp, a temporary military force organized in the summer of 1776 as a rapid-response unit. Authorized by the Continental Congress, the Flying Camp was intended to consist of approximately 10,000 men drawn from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware. Its primary directive was to reinforce the Continental Army and support George Washington in the defense of the Middle Colonies during the early stages of the American Revolutionary War.

Following the close of the American Revolutionary War, Elias married Ann Lindsay on April 10, 1789, in Middlesex. Ann was born in New Jersey. Elias and Ann established their family first in New Jersey, where their eldest child was born, and later removed to Pennsylvania, where their remaining children were born. Their known children include: Ann (b. 1791), Christian, Elizabeth (b. 1794), Sarah (b. 1796), Samuel (b. 1797), Frances “Fannie” (b. 1799), James (b. 1802), Lindsay, Timothy (b. 1803), Elias, Margaret, and Mahalah (b. 1811).

Elias and Ann are both buried at Tent Church Cemetery, Georges Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania..

Their son, Samuel Hatfield, was born December 6, 1797, in Uniontown. He later removed to Illinois, where he died on August 3, 1877, in McDonough County, and is buried at Arche-Bethel Cemetery.

Samuel married Rebecca Vance, daughter of William Vance and Rachel Minum, prior to 1821. Rebecca was born December 11, 1802, and died October 31, 1862, in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. She is buried at Great Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. Samuel and Rebecca were the parents of: Sarah Jane Hatfield Ross (1821–1885); Lydia Ann Hatfield Bryson (1822–1885); Lucinda Hatfield Frisbie (1825–1852); Rachel Hatfield Mitchell (1825–1861); William Hatfield (1826–1857); Elias Hatfield (1831–1910); Freeman Lindsey Hatfield (1833–1864); Samuel Hatfield (1834–1908); Mintun Hatfield (1836–1917); Rebecca B. Hatfield Hook (1840–1897); and Mary Elizabeth Hatfield Jeffries (1842–1920).
