Capt John Aaron Lott, a revolutionary soldier, later known as Gentlman Lott, was born about 1740, in Edgecombe County, North Carolina Colony. He was the son of John Aaron Lott of Virginia Colony and his wife, Bridgett Emilie, born in Wiltshire England. Both of these aged parents passed in British West Flordia, in 1778. He was born abt 1740,

in Edgecombe Co., NC (Later Duplin Co), and died 31 July 1810, Washington Co., MS

John married Sarah, "Sallie" Lightfoot, ab. 1760, in Duplin County, North Carolina. She is believed to have been the daughter of Phillips Lightfoot, III and Susannah Smith. She was born 1748, in Duplin County, NC, and died 01 August 1818, in Tattnall (Montgomery) Co., GA or Telfair Co., GA. A family tradition said she was a full‐blood Cherokee Indian, but this fact remains unproven.

John fought in the American Revolution War in a South Carolina Regiment. When British troops invaded Burke County, Georgia, John and his family fled to South Carolina where they assisted with supplies and provided military service to the militia. His son, John Lott IV, was the first known settler of Marion County, Mississippi in the Creek Indian Nation. His passport, signed by the Governor of Georgia, is dated 6 Dec 1805. The Lotts settled at what became known as ‘Lott’s Bluff’, later Columbia, Marion Co., MI, in 1811. John IV and his brother William donated the land for the beginnings of the town of Columbia, county‐seat of Marion County (Marion was one of the original counties at the time of Mississippi statehood in 1817, and is said to be named for the Revolutionary War hero Gen Francis Marion, known as the “Swamp Fox”).

He made a claim against the state for 30 days Militia duty on 19 Oct 1784, SC (Salley Stub Entries to Indents, Book I p 63.).
