A Revolutionary soldier from North Carolina, John Marton Peterson Jr, was born in Duplin Co., NC, 2 June 1765. He was the son of John Marton Peterson Sr, of Brunswick Co., VA, (Brunswick Co., Will Book p 525, John Peterson, died 16 May 1763, Northampton Co., NC), and his wife Martha Barrette. He grew up in Northampton County and was married there. He married twice, both named Elizabeth. Elizabeth Alford was born in 1785, and died in 1819. They married in 1818, in Georgia. Elizabeth (surname unknown), his second wife, was born in GA in 1785, and died in Coffee Co., GA, about 1860. The names of all of his children from his first marriage are not known but those children who moved with him to the Wiregrass Georgia in what was then Appling and Ware counties (now Ware, Coffee, and Echols counties).

About 1790, John moved from North Carolina to Georgia and was granted 200 acres of land in Effingham Co., on Feb. 12, 1791. In 1796 his land was taken into Bulloch County, upon its creation. In 1797‐98, John moved to Montgomery County where his name appeared on the tax rolls. When Telfair County was created, he became a part of that county. John spent his last remaining years with his children, at his home north of the Omulgee River. The 1820 and 1830 Land Lottery shows him living in the 6th land district annexed from Appling Co. He appears in the 1840 Telfair Co., census. John died in lower Telfair County (present day Coffee Co.) about 1840‐1845. John and both of his wives, are buried in the Peterson Cem., Coffee Co., GA. Known children of John and Elizabeth Alford are John, III, Elizabeth (b. 1794), Lucinda "Lucy" (b. 1796) , James, William and Daniel Peterson. Those from his second marriage are Eliza (b. 1820), Henry "Hal" (b. 1821), and Alfred Peterson (b. 1827). John Peterson III, was killed in 1856, in a knife fight with William Gaskins. Elizabeth Peterson, married James "Jim" Davis on 18 Jul 1820, Telfair Co., GA. Following his death she married Joseph Ricketson abt 1845, in Georgia. Lucinda "Lucy" Peterson, born Montgomery Co., GA, died 17 March 1848, in Douglas, Coffee Co., GA. She married Daniel Lott, Sr. 25 August 1814, in Telfair Co., GA. James Peterson, born 1800 in Montgomery Co., GA; died 1867 in GA. He married (1) Rachel Ricketson 24 January 1825, in 1813, in Montgomery Co., GA. Following their marriage they moved to Florida. He died 30 October 1872, in Coffee Co., GA.
