When Lieutenant Nathaniel Seger was born on 28 January 1755, in Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts, his father, Josiah Segar (1713‐ ), was 41 and his mother, Thankful Allen, was 38 (1717‐1801). Nathaniel married Mary Russell about 1788, in Maine. They were the parents of at least 8 sons and 6 daughters. The children of Nathaniel and Seger and Mary Russell were, Pamelia 1789‐1855, Edmond 1790‐1797, Abigail 1791‐1888, Allen 1793‐1872, Apphia 1794‐1861, Assa 1795 ‐ . Lucy 1796‐1886, Mary 1797‐1891, Edmond 1798 ‐ , Russell 1800 ‐ , Nathan 1801‐, John E 1803‐1882, Nathaiel B 1804 ‐ , and Mitty B 1806‐1824.
Nathaniel Seger of Newton was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, serving as a Private in Capt. Amariah Fuller's company, which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775, to headquarters at Cambridge and in Capt. Nathan Fuller's company, [[|Lieut. Col. William Bond's (37th) regiment in 1775, and in Capt. Edward Fuller's company, Col. William Mcintosh's regiment early in 1778 stationed at Roxbury, and as a Corporal in Capt. Benjamin Edgell's company, Col. John Jacobs's regiment later in 1778. His application for pension is *S31356. On 3 August 1781, Lt. Nathaniel Segar was taken captive during an Indian raid and forced to hike through Maine Canada where he became a prisoner.
Census showed that Nathaniel was still living in Maine, United States in 1840. Still a patriot in later years he registered for military service in 1825. He died on 10 September 1847, in Hanover, Oxford, Maine, United States, at the age of 92. Both Nathaniel and Mary are buried in the Hanover Cemetery, Hanover, Oxford County, Maine.
Nathaniel is honored by the Society of the Daughter of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor #A101480. DAR records indicate that Nathaniel died September 10, 1847, in Hanover, Oxford county, Maine and that his wife's name was Mary Russell. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of his son Allen Segar, who married 1) Elizabeth Howard and 2) Achsa Howard. [6]
Researchers Notes ‐ Nathaniel's DAR records are found under the spelling of the surname as "Seeger," with the disclaimer that reads, "As such, the DAR assigns a single standard surname that covers variant spellings of similar surnames. While the surname may appear incorrect, this does not mean it is in error. This spelling system ensures that patriots are not established under more than one spelling."
