John was born on 31 April 1742, in Virginia. He married Mary X, maybe Mott. He lived in Richmond County, Virginia, and enlisted in the army there. After the war, he moved to Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and then some years later to North Carolina. He had 8 siblings, one of whom was his sister, Nancy Hanks, mother of Abraham Lincoln. John died on 21 June 1780. Court house records were burned, so not much more is known about him.

John's son Abner, #A051121 is also an American Revolutionary War patriot.
